Psilocybin treatment in Colorado is not yet legal or medically available despite media hype. Learn why Axis Integrated Mental Health prioritizes proven, research-backed treatments over premature trends.

Is Psilocybin Treatment Actually Available in Colorado?

Despite the excitement around Proposition 122 and media reports suggesting immediate access, psilocybin treatment is not legally or clinically available through licensed mental health providers in Colorado as of now. Axis Integrated Mental Health does not currently offer psilocybin, and here’s why.

What Prop 122 Really Does—and What It Doesn’t

Prop 122 decriminalized personal use, possession, and cultivation of psilocybin for adults 21 and over, and it laid the groundwork for licensed healing centers. However, this does not equate to legalization for medical treatment. As of early 2025, licensed centers have only just begun the regulatory process, and therapy-based treatment options are not yet legally available to patients.

Why Psilocybin Is Not Yet FDA-Approved

Although the FDA has granted psilocybin "breakthrough therapy" status for treatment-resistant depression, the compound is still under investigation. Legal, prescription-based use requires rigorous clinical trials and regulatory review. Until those hurdles are cleared, psilocybin remains unavailable in traditional healthcare settings.

What the Research Really Shows

Some early trials using synthetic psilocybin (like Comp360) have shown promise in relieving depression and anxiety. However, many studies had small sample sizes and focused on specific populations, such as cancer patients facing end-of-life distress. These conditions are very different from the general population, and no long-term, large-scale data has yet confirmed psilocybin's efficacy in broader mental health contexts.

Risks and Limitations You Should Know

  • Decriminalization is not legalization: Psilocybin use remains federally illegal and is not approved for prescription.
  • Drug interactions: Patients on antidepressants must wean off before psilocybin use, which can be medically risky.
  • Inconsistent dosing: Natural mushrooms vary in potency, creating challenges in safe administration.
  • Lack of insurance coverage: Psychedelic therapy is expensive, requiring intensive psychotherapy sessions (often 8+ hours per dose) that are not covered by insurance.

Why Axis Doesn’t Offer Psilocybin—Yet

Our mission is to offer evidence-based, research-backed mental health treatments. At Axis Integrated Mental Health, we already see powerful, measurable results from treatments like TMS, Spravato, and ketamine. While we support the ongoing research into psychedelics, we won’t offer a treatment until it’s proven to be safe, effective, and accessible.

Curious About Psychedelic Therapy? Here’s What to Do Next

If you’re interested in exploring psychedelic-assisted therapy, your best next steps are:

  • Stay informed about clinical trials in Colorado and nationwide.
  • Speak with a psychiatric provider about whether FDA-approved options like ketamine or Spravato may help.
  • Avoid self-medicating with unregulated psilocybin products.

The Bottom Line

Psilocybin therapy may one day become a valuable tool in mental health care, but for now, the research and legal systems are still catching up. At Axis Integrated Mental Health, we’re watching closely—and we’ll be ready when science and safety align.
