Imagine getting a prescription from your psychiatrist—not for pills, but for a pair of tickets to the Denver Botanic Gardens. It might sound unconventional, but this is exactly the kind of support more mental health professionals are turning to. Known as social prescribing, this approach leverages non-medical, community-based activities to support mental wellness. At Axis Integrated Mental Health, we believe social prescribing is a powerful tool in helping our patients achieve sustainable healing.
Social prescribing involves connecting patients with activities like walking clubs, gardening, volunteering, or simply spending time in nature. It’s a holistic approach that supports both psychological and physical well-being by addressing the social and environmental factors that influence mental health.
"We’re very adept at managing the biology of depression," says Axis co-founder Chris Perez. "But if we send people back into the same environments and habits that made them sick, we’re not helping them sustain their healing."
At Axis, we view treatment as the foundation, not the finish line. Social prescribing helps patients engage in meaningful experiences that support the neuroplasticity we foster through treatments like medication management, TMS, and ketamine therapy. It's about helping patients turn clinical progress into lasting life changes.
The benefits of nature-based interventions are well-documented. Research shows that spending time in green spaces reduces cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, and boosts mood, focus, and cognitive function. A 30-minute walk in a natural environment can result in improved memory, reduced anxiety, and greater emotional well-being.
This concept, known as biophilia, suggests that humans are biologically wired to seek connection with nature. Exposure to natural environments, especially those with water, has been shown to promote restoration and sustained mental clarity, making it a cornerstone of effective social prescribing strategies.
Recognizing the therapeutic value of nature, Axis became one of the first mental health clinics in Colorado to invest in a corporate membership to the Denver Botanic Gardens. Our goal: to make healing experiences more accessible to our patients.
One patient, for example, had long been fascinated by bonsai trees but suffered from panic attacks when near large buildings due to trauma from a natural disaster. Through our social prescribing program, he visited the Gardens with his family to see the Bill Hosokawa Bonsai Pavilion. He later reflected on the experience with his therapist and made significant breakthroughs. On his final day of treatment, he was gifted his bonsai to care for as a symbol of his growth.
According to the World Health Organization, social prescribing improves health and well-being and reduces strain on healthcare systems. Countries like the UK, Singapore, and Canada have implemented national frameworks with success. A WHO toolkit outlines how to implement programs and highlights outcomes such as:
Randomized trials also show that patients referred to community-based programs experience significant emotional improvements compared to traditional care.
Healing doesn’t end in the treatment room—it continues with our daily actions. Social prescribing helps patients build healthier habits by:
These experiences reinforce what neuroscience calls self-directed neuroplasticity—the process of intentionally reshaping your brain through repeated positive actions. Whether it’s joining a local choir, learning to garden, or simply taking daily nature walks, these activities help patients sustain the progress they’ve made in treatment.
If you're in the Denver metro area, you have direct access to a wide range of social prescribing opportunities through Axis. As part of our program, our team can connect you with:

What if healing wasn’t confined to a clinic or a bottle? What if your next step toward mental wellness included a walk in the park, a hands-on hobby, or a conversation with someone who shares your interests?
At Axis Integrated Mental Health, we believe the future of psychiatry is integrated, holistic, and deeply human. Social prescribing helps bridge the gap between clinical progress and a fulfilling life outside the treatment room.
